2014 SNL COMMENCEMENT:

2014 was a unique year for the DePaul University School for New Learning (SNL) Commencement, with more than 18 graduates from the Adult Bridge Program with the City Colleges of Chicago.  The 18 students consist of 15 graduates from Truman College and three from Wright College, including three who graduated with master’s degrees. Tecora Rogers, a master’s student and graduate from Truman College, was selected to be this year’s commencement speaker from a class of over 500 for her prolific and internationally renowned career as a singer, composer, teacher and producer.

Born and raised in Chicago, Rogers’ infectious warmth and vocal prowess has wowed listeners across the globe.  Her international commercial credits include singing lead vocals for the “KFC is Cookin’” television and radio advertisements and background vocals on the Starhub television commercial in Singapore. Throughout her career, Rogers has performed with several prominent jazz musicians and established her own international gospel group that tours annually. Tecora Rogers & the Chicago Spirituals is the official gospel group for Spirit of Chicago Cruises.

At commencement, Rogers stated: “If we all share the goal of improving the lives of others, we can be a powerful force.”  She reminisced about her time at Truman, saying: “Dr. Anghesom Atsbaha stopped me as I walked down the halls of Truman College and told me about the Adult Bridge Program. As I began my academic career at DePaul, I could not believe what a perfect fit the SNL program was for my adult life style. This one conversation in the halls of Truman College was the catalyst to my understanding what I wanted to do in my life and how I would get there!”

These 18 individuals join more than 6,800 graduates from DePaul this academic year and among them are accountants, playwrights, environmentalists, lawyers, film producers, teachers, real estate executives, Fulbright scholars, intercultural communicators and percussionists. They also join a network of more than 160,000 DePaul alumni living around the world. This year’s graduates have succeeded in an environment that values academic achievement and community responsibility—values that will remain with them throughout their lives and careers.

Celebrating more than 40 years of adult student success, SNL is an international leader in educating adults, offering flexible undergraduate and graduate programs. It pioneered individualized degree programs, online learning for adult students and competency-based education. Its inventive approach to education has been used as a model around the world. The Adult Bridge Program with the City Colleges of Chicago is designed for adults age 24 and older who, because of demands on their time and financial resources, find it difficult to pursue a traditional path to a degree. By facilitating transition rather than transfer, the bridge program assists students in developing their learning styles and finding ways of coping with fears and concerns in preparing for their long-term learning goals. FOR CITY COLLEGE ADULT BRIDGE TRANSFERS:

DePaul University Transfer and Adult Student Orientation for SNL

Making the connection with a university can be difficult. How do you connect with a university's faculty and staff? How do you make connections with the friends and classmates that await you in a large urban center like Chicago?

The answer is simple: Transition DePaul.

We recognize that you may have attended an orientation already as a freshman at another institution. And, we also recognize that your needs are different from that of a freshman student. That's why we've created the Transition DePaul program. In fact, Transition DePaul could be your most beneficial experience as you start at DePaul.

Your new environment promises fresh challenges and opportunities and Transition DePaul will help you to make your most crucial connections at DePaul University. Our orientation staff will make certain that you get connected with university resources, services and involvement opportunities. In fact, Transition DePaul could be your most beneficial experience of the summer!

Transition DePaul, our mandatory orientation program for transfer and adult students, is a day-long program offered throughout the summer for students entering in the autumn quarter, and periodically throughout the academic year for students who begin in the winter and spring quarters. Depending on your college, your Transition DePaul program will either be in the Loop or Lincoln Park campus. Transition offers a convenient way to learn about college specific requirements, register for courses, discover campus resources, and meet future classmates.

DePaul has academic resources to help students prepare for their Transition DePaul sessions. Students are encouraged to explore the undergraduate course catalog, and review the registration and degree planning tools. To learn more about these resources, please visit http://depaulcentral.depaul.edu and select the "New Student" link under the "Additional Resources" tab.

Bridging the Gap – Your Link to Academic Success

In Lifelong Learning at Its Best (1999), the Bridge program was called one of the best practices of collaborative models in the nation.

Truman College and SNL have been partners in the Bridge program since 1991. The program has since expanded to Wright College. A unique learning experience, the program combines City Colleges and DePaul resources to help students make a successful transition from one institution to the other.

This includes administrative cooperation, team-taught courses, intensive advising and guidance, a student progress tracking system, student-to-student support, student clusters, peer mentoring, and career-guidance. It is an ideal program for adults who have completed or are near completion of an Associate Degree.

The Bridge program is designed for adults age 24 and older who, because of demands on their time and financial resources, find it difficult to pursue a traditional path to a degree. By facilitating transition rather than transfer, the Bridge program assists students in developing their learning styles and finding ways of coping with fears and concerns in preparing for their long-term learning goals.

Team-taught courses are the driving force of the Bridge program. Students from the different institutions come together, supported by the commitment of Bridge faculty to multi-cultural diversity, social justice and student access to higher learning.

More than 90 Bridge courses have been offered to date. Many Bridge students have earned DePaul degrees.  You can also get credit for your certifications!

For more information about the Adult Bridge Program, email snlbridge@depaul.edu or call 312-362-5193.
