Proficiency Exams

SNL offers 4 proficiency exams that meet competency requirements, and an Independent Learning Pursuit in Language Proficiency for H1G.  Each exam has a non-refundable $150 assessment fee. Pre-requisite: You must be in or have completed LL 250 Foundations to take a proficiency exam. You must take a proficiency exam at least two quarters before the quarter you plan to graduate. Exam review decisions are final. Email snlexams@depaul.edu with any questions.

 
L4 Writing Portfolio Proficiency Exam

Follow the steps below:
  1. Gather and edit materials per the L4 exam instructions.
  2. Register for the L4 exam in Campus Connect when registration for the quarter is open (no later than 1st week of classes).  Find the registration number on the first page of the quarterly SNL BA Course Schedule. This course, LL 61 Writing Proficiency Exam, will be activated in D2L one week before the quarter begins. All materials needed for the exam are available on the SNL website.
  3. Log in to https://d2l.depaul.edu  using your Campus Connect ID and password. Upload each essay file and your Proficiency Cover Page form into the course Dropbox  for assessment by the deadline. The Cover Page form is in the Dropbox.
  4. Exam results will be available at the end of the quarter in D2L.
Deadline: the exam portfolio must be submitted to D2L by the 5th week of the quarter, or by April 24th, 2017 at 11:59pm (CST) for Spring Quarter. Submissions will not be accepted after that date. 
 

L5 Critical Thinking Proficiency Exam

This exam is sent to applicants on the 2nd Friday of each month.  Deadline: Completed work  must be submitted by 11:59 pm (CST) on the Sunday of the weekend you received the exam.

The L5 exam tests students on the following competency criteria:

L5: Can analyze issues and reconcile problems through critical and appreciative thinking.
  1. Analyzes, critiques, and evaluates different forms and level of thinking and reasoned discourse.
  2. Constructs well-reasoned arguments in the context of real-life experiences and issues.
Please note: if you fail to submit the L5 Exam Registration Form at least one week in advance of your desired test date, you will not be registered for the exam.
 
Beginning Summer Quarter 2017, students will register themselves for the L5 Critical Thinking Exam and it will be offered once per quarter. Exam materials will be available on D2L during the weekend of the scheduled exam.
 
For Summer Quarter 2017, register using Registration Number 40571 within the first week of classes. Exam materials will be available on D2L for completion from June 30th, 2017 at 9:00am until July 2nd, 2017 at 11:59pm. The next offering will be Autumn Quarter.

L6 Quantitative Reasoning Portfolio Proficiency Exam

 
Follow the steps below:
  1. Gather and edit materials per the L6 exam instructions.
  2. Register for the L6 exam in Campus Connect when registration for the quarter is open (no later than 1st week of classes). Find the registration number on the first page of the quarterly SNL BA Course Schedule. This course, LL 63 MTH/ ALG Proficiency Exam, will be activated in D2L one week before the quarter begins.  All materials needed for the exam are available on the SNL website.  
  3. Logon to https://d2l.depaul.edu using your Campus Connect ID and password. Upload completed materials into the course Dropbox for assessment by the deadline.
  4. Exam results will be available at the end of the quarter in D2L.
Deadline: Exam portfolio must be submitted to D2L by the 6th week of the quarter, or by May 1st, 2017 at 11:59pm (CST) for Spring Quarter. Submissions will not be accepted after that date.


S5 Information Technology Portfolio Proficiency Exam

This exam is available only to students admitted to SNL prior to Autumn 2016, and students readmitted through Spring 2017. The last date when students may register for this exam is May 17, 2017. The exam will no longer be offered as a demonstration of the S5 competence for eligible students after May 2017.
  1. Before you register, confirm your admit date in Campus Connect (Main Menu>Self Service>Academic Records>View Unofficial Transcript). 
  2. Complete the S5 Exam Registration Form.  Please note: if you fail to submit the S5 Exam Registration Form at least one week in advance of your desired test date, you will not be registered for the exam.
  3.  The exam will be available to registered students on D2L by noon on the 3rd Friday of each month.
  4.  Deadline: Your completed portfolio must be uploaded to the Dropbox in D2L by 11:59 pm (CST) on Sunday of the weekend you take the exam.
The S5 exam tests students on the following competency criteria:

S5: Can use current information technology for integrated solutions to problems.  
  1. Uses the current suite of software applications at a basic level as recommended by the University, including a text editor, presentation software, database management, and spreadsheets.
  2. Uses and comprehends the structure of current Internet technology as recommended by the University, including electronic mail and web browsing.
  3. Identifies a problem or problems that require(s) an information technology solution and applies a tentative solution demonstrating command and in-depth knowledge of the tools and techniques used.
